The 2000s R&B albums debate is back: Complex crowns Usher's “Confessions”
It's No. 1. D'Angelo, The-Dream and Mariah round out the top four — and the timeline has thoughts.

Complex dropped "The 50 Best R&B Albums of the 2000s, Ranked" on Monday and the comment sections haven't slept. Usher's Confessions takes the crown, ahead of D'Angelo's Voodoo, The-Dream's Love vs. Money, Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi and Beyoncé's B'Day.
The rest of the top ten: The Diary of Alicia Keys, Ashanti, Sade's Lovers Rock, Erykah Badu's Mama's Gun and Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds. Further down, Usher shows up again with 8701 at No. 11, Janet's All for You sits at 19, Ciara's Goodies at 28, Mary J. Blige's No More Drama at 39, and Michael Jackson's Invincible closes the list at 50.
- No. 1
- Usher — Confessions
- No. 2
- D'Angelo — Voodoo
- No. 3
- The-Dream — Love vs. Money
- No. 4
- Mariah Carey — The Emancipation of Mimi
Our take? Confessions at No. 1 is hard to argue with: the singles, the sales, the storyline. But Love vs. Money at three is the brave pick of the list, and Mama's Gun at nine feels low for an album that still sounds like the future. And yes, we've noticed whose albums aren't in that top ten.
You know what to do. Give us your top five of the decade in the comments.
